Generational Joy

I look at this picture and am wonderfully amazed. I see my son and grandson. I know, I know there are lots of folks with sons and grandsons in the same picture but this two generational view gives me much joy.

My parents are dead. My only brother has died. My wife's parents have died. Our grandparents have died and most of our aunts and uncles. Yet, we have been blessed by God to live long enoungh to see this generational "hand-off" of traditions, joy, family connectedness, and fun.

God's mercies are many and endure from generation to generation.

The smile on my youngest grandson's face reflects the joy we experienced at being with our family (one daughter excepted) during this Advent season. Enjoy some of the pictures of our joyous family times together.

Reconstructing Politics

I have often heard, over the years, that what we need as a people are statesmen and not politicians. What I understand that to mean is that the American Republic, in order to survive, needs men of moral courage and and conviction. One of the elements that defines a "statesman" is found, I believe, in the words of Theodore Roosevelt.

"I do not believe that any an should ever attempt to make politics his only career. It is a dreadful misfortune for a man to grow to feel that his whole livelihood and whole happiness depend upon his staying in political office. Such a feeling prevents him from being of real service to the people while in office and always puts him under the heaviest strain of pressure to barter his convictions for the sake of holding office."

May God grant that one day the offices of our land are again filled with men with the same conviction and commitment.

Generations

Here's Perry IV admiring (?) the photo of his grandpa as an infant. He seems a bit stunned at the remarkable family resemblance (or so I have been told!).
